Hi, I’m Rukia, and welcome to the highlights of my life.

I am a first-year Molecular Biosciences Ph.D. Graduate Student at Rutgers University, in New Brunswick.

Life with Rukia was born out of the desire to document aspects of my life as I journey through graduate school and life. When I made the decision to pursue a doctoral graduate degree in STEM, I was submitting applications to medical school. And part of my delay in pursuing a Ph.D. degree was the fact that I didn’t even consider it a suitable career option for myself.

Growing up in Guyana, the picture I had in my mind of what a scientist looked like was nothing like what I saw in the mirror. It was reported that in 2016, less than 1% of black women pursued a doctoral degree in Science and Engineering. In my opinion, a lack of representation is a major deterrent for black women pursuing doctoral degrees in Science and Engineering.

My ultimate desire is to create content that not only showcases the amazing world of science and research but also features my love for God, fashion, beauty, and health. I hope that after visiting this site, young black girls will not only be empowered to know that they can be scientists, but women and men alike can see that this is what a scientist looks like, and be inspired.

Life with Rukia is here to empower and cultivate the next generation of scientists breaking down barriers and stereotypes, and leaving an impactful footprint in the world.
